Post-nominals

Approved Use of CILGD Post-Nominal Letters

The Chartered Institute of Local Governance and Development authorizes members in good standing to use specific post-nominal letters representing their professional grade. These designations are protected marks of the Institute.

Authorized Designations by Grade

The following post-nominal designations are approved under the Institute's Constitution:

FCILGD

(Fellow)

Reserved exclusively for active, fully approved Fellows. It represents the highest professional standing within the Institute.

MCILGD

(Full Member)

Authorized for Full Members in good standing who have completed all professional admission requirements.

ACILGD

(Associate Member)

Authorized for Associate Members who maintain active registration and fulfill their professional standards.

HonFCILGD

(Honorary Fellow)

Conferred by Council upon distinguished individuals for exceptional, lifelong contributions to local governance.

Regulatory Rules & Order of Presentation

To maintain professional standards, members must adhere strictly to these rules of presentation and use:

  1. Correct Order & Styling

CILGD post-nominals should follow academic degrees and chartered statuses, but precede minor society listings. No punctuation marks should be used within the designation (e.g., 'Dr. Jane Doe, PhD, FCILGD').

  2. Good Standing Requirement

The right to display CILGD designations is conditional upon maintaining active membership, renewing annual subscriptions, and complying with all compulsory CPD reporting requirements.

  3. Suspension, Lapse, and Revocation

Any member whose subscription lapses, is suspended, or has their status revoked by the Disciplinary Committee must immediately cease using CILGD post-nominals on all resumes, signatures, correspondence, and public profiles.

  4. Retired & Former Member Status

Former members who have resigned or retired from active practice may not use standard active post-nominals unless specifically authorized in writing by the Council as 'Retired' (e.g., 'FCILGD (Ret.)').

  5. Misuse and Misrepresentation Consequences

Unauthorized use of post-nominals by non-members, or continued use by former members not in good standing, constitutes credentials fraud and an ethical breach. The Institute reserves the right to publish public disclosures of misrepresentation and take formal legal action.
